Perhaps appropriately, on the day before Halloween, 1991, a National Guard Pavehawk helicopter went down in stormy waters off Long Island, N.Y. Ironically, the aircraft was attached to the 106th Air Rescue Group based at Westhampton Beach and was attempting to rescue a stranded sailor sixty miles offshore. Failing in its attempts to refuel from a tanker plane while airborne, the helicopter was intentionally ditched in the water. Four of the five crew members were shortly rescued. The fifth was missing. Technical Sergeant Arden Smith, then 32, was never found again.
A joint service rescue operation was undertaken in the stormtossed waters, with military personnel searching around the clock. No sign of the airman was found. Rescue efforts, like luck, are not everlasting, and the search was called off. On November 12, 1991, Arden Smith was officially declared dead. Yet a week after this fatal declaration, the search was mysteriously renewed. Even though the Marines, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard had not found Smith, a psychic claimed to know where he might be found—alive. The government listened. The psychic, who had been consulted during the more traditional search efforts, now assured the officials that the airman was alive, and indicated an area of the Atlantic that should be searched for the survivor.
On November 18, 1991, and continuing for several days thereafter, search planes went out on their mission to verify the psychic’s advice. Nothing. An additional search was undertaken around Thanksgiving of that year. A spokesman for the Air National Guard Rescue Unit stated at the time, “The psychic met with Marianne Smith (the airman’s wife), and based on information they were able to come up with, the psychic was able to pinpoint another area to search.” Again, no airman was found. However, survival materials were found in the area indicated by the psychic.4 This story comes from open source material, specifically, Newsday. It gives rise to some interesting questions. Was the psychic truly a freelance agent, or was he or she part of the (then) Stargate government remote-viewing program? If the psychic was a freelancer, were the official government psychics tasked in the search? (The official answer is no, but don’t you believe it.) This type of operation was tailor-made for the Stargate viewers. The fact that survival materials were found in the psychically indicated area also speaks for a degree of expertise in remote viewing that would unlikely be found in the civilian sector in 1991. Alas, we must wait for some report on the matter to be declassified before we can say we know for sure.
The Pavehawk helicopter incident may be labeled a partial success. No, the missing airman was never found, neither dead nor alive, but survival materials were found. It is no great leap of logic to state that where there are survival materials, there probably was an airman nearby, either trying to survive, or already dead. Of course, the media has a tendency to fudge facts, or get them wrong unintentionally. We
